AdvertisementIn an overlooked lawsuit, Donald Trump's lawyers are exhibiting a habit from his White House days: Hunting for anonymous sources. At each turn, a lawyer for the Pulitzer Board members stopped their clients from answering. The journalists whom Trump's lawyers deposed did, however, offer some characterization of the "consultants" who conducted the reviews. The Pulitzer Prize Board is hosted by Columbia University, in Manhattan, which manages the small organization's payroll and offers institutional support. Chad Bowman, a Ballard Spahr attorney representing the Pulitzer board members, directed Business Insider to court filings.

Aug 1 (Reuters) - Paycom (PAYC.N) projected third-quarter revenue in line with market estimates on Tuesday and beat earnings expectations for the April-June period as demand for its human resource and payroll services withstood an uncertain economy. The results follow a strong report from rival Automatic Data Processing (ADP.O) and show a stable labour market is feeding demand for payroll services providers, even as rising interest rates and still-high inflation cloud the industry's outlook. Paycom forecast current-quarter revenue between $410 million and $412 million, compared with estimates of $412 million, according to analysts polled by Refinitiv. It also nudged up both the bottom and top end of its full-year revenue forecast by $2 million to a range of $1.715 billion to $1.717 billion. Paycom has in recent years benefited from rising demand for its Beti service, which allows for self-payroll and automation.

N'DJAMENA, June 12 (Reuters) - Thousands of Sudanese refugees who fled to Chad to escape fighting in their country could be cut off from humanitarian and medical aid during the approaching rainy season, medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) said on Monday. Rains will also bring a higher risk of waterborne and infectious diseases given poor access to clean water and sanitation, she said. Nearly 30,000 refugees are in Sila, where they lack shelter, water and food due to deficiencies in humanitarian assistance. One of the poorest countries in the world, Chad was already hosting close to 600,000 refugees before the latest Sudanese crisis. This has caused food and commodity prices to soar in areas already suffering from high levels of malnutrition, MSF said.

June 7 (Reuters) - Chad Rigetti, the founder of Rigetti Computing (RGTI.O), joined quantum technology-focused fund QDNL Participations as a partner, the venture capital firm said on Wednesday. Rigetti Computing started trading on Nasdaq in March 2022 after a merger with a blank-check company. Rigetti left the quantum computing firm backed by Y Combinator and Andreessen Horowitz late last year. Backed by Europe-based Quantum Delta NL foundation, QDNL Participations is a 15 million euro ($16.02 million) fund for early-stage Dutch quantum technology start-ups. Still, it is uncertain when these machines would be ready despite billions being poured into the technology, with big tech companies such as Alphabet (GOOGL.O), IBM (IBM.N) and Microsoft (MSFT.O) betting on this future computing technology.

More than 100,000 flee to Chad from Sudan conflict, UNHCR says

JOHANNESBURG, June 1 (Reuters) - More than 100,000 people have fled violence in Sudan to neighbouring Chad and the numbers could double in the next three months, the U.N. refugee agency said on Thursday. The near seven-week conflict has pushed Sudan into a humanitarian crisis and turned one of Africa's greatest cities - the three-part capital of Khartoum, Omdurman and Bahri on the confluence on the Blue and White Niles - into a war zone. One of the poorest countries in the world, Chad was already hosting close to 600,000 refugees before conflict broke out in Sudan in April. UNHCR said it needs $214.1 million to provide vital services to displaced people in the country, which is currently 16% funded. The county auctioned Fox's property for about $25,000 — and kept the $22,000 difference between the sale price and Fox's tax obligation. But Fox’s class action did not name only Gratiot County as a defendant. Circuit Court disagreed. The 6th Circuit in the Fox case agreed with the 2nd Circuit's holding that trial courts must consider constitutional standing issues ahead of class certification. The Michigan counties that challenged class certification were represented at the 6th Circuit by Douglas Curlew of Cummings, McClorey, Davis & Acho.
Exxon closed the sale of its operations in Chad and Cameroon to Africa-focused oil and gas producer Savannah in a $407 million deal in December. Chad has nationalized the assets on its side of the border, including Exxon's share of the over 1,000 km (621 miles) Chad-Cameroon oil pipeline. Savannah Energy has said it will pursue its legal rights over Chad's decision to nationalize Exxon's assets it had acquired. The company said on Wednesday that it had sold a 10% stake of the share capital of the Cameroon Oil Transportation Company which owns and operates the 903km Cameroon section of the Chad-Cameroon pipeline to Cameroon national oil company (SNH). Chad said in its statement that it was not informed of this sale which was contrary to the status of the pipeline company.

A-frames are easily recognized by their triangular shape. It is the result of bringing the roof down and eliminating the walls, said Brent Campbell, an architect in Asheville, N.C. “They became this sort of iconic shape for rural vacation retreat-type structures,” said Mr. Campbell. In the book “A-Frame,” author Chad Randl, an architecture historian and professor at the University of Oregon, wrote that A-frames have shown up in history from ancient Japan to rural Europe. These structures are strong and snow slides right off their pitched roofs, making them appealing in remote, cold areas. Because they were affordable and functional, A-frames became a popular vacation-home style in the U.S. in the 1950s.
WASHINGTON, Nov 12 (Reuters) - Debt levels among low- and middle-income countries rose sharply in 2021, with China accounting for 66% of lending by official bilateral creditors, World Bank President David Malpass said, underscoring the need to reduce the debt of poorer countries. The World Bank's annual report on global debt statistics, due out next month, makes clear that private sector creditors also needed to participate in debt reductions, Malpass told Reuters in an interview on Friday. Preliminary data released by the World Bank in June showed the external debt stock of low- and middle-income countries rose, on average, 6.9% in 2021 to $9.3 trillion, outpacing the 5.3% growth seen in 2020. Malpass said the bank's forthcoming International Debt Statistics report was troubling, but gave no specific numbers. Malpass also called for faster work on a debt restructuring for Zambia, which first requested help under the common framework in early 2021.
Here's how you can get a grip on your personal finances before and during a recession. We do weird things in times of recession, like comfort-eating meatloaf and ice cream, according to food trend experts. We're also more prone to panicking and making mistakes with our money, personal finance experts and economists told Insider. "A recession sort of reveals problems that people may have, and not necessarily pay attention to much in the good times," he said. In good times, with interest rates low, your viewpoint can be obscured by the ease of getting credit, he said.
Personal finance experts urge building an emergency fund ahead of a likely recession in 2023. The key to bulletproofing your finances is having an emergency fund. What is an emergency fund? How big should my emergency fund be? The experts interviewed by Insider agreed that an emergency fund should cover between three and six months' worth of expenses — a consensus supported by Well Fargo.
Legend has it that 3,000 years ago, two gods took their fight for control of the Japanese islands to the sumo ring. With such a heritage, it is no wonder that sumo wrestling has remained the quintessential Japanese sport. Today, a towering 23-year-old American shattered an almost sacred barrier in a sport that is as much ritual as wrestling. Chad Rowan, known professionally as Akebono, was recommended for elevation to the sumo's exalted rank of yokozuna, or grand champion. Konishiki's complaints that racism had been a factor provoked an embarrassing controversy that reinforced Japan's image abroad as a closed society.
